About the Image(s)

The title is relevant as this was the first time I photographed wild lions whilst lying down rather than in a safari vehicle. We are in Mana Pools, Zimbabwe, which I have shown images from before. We had a guide with a rifle, which in practice they very rarely use.

We were about the same distance from our vehicle as to the lions. This was taken with my old Olympus gear, at 246mm (FF = 492) 1/640 f5.6 ISO500.

After cropping to what I thought was enough to tell the story, I brightened the whole up somewhat, then worked just on the lions, adding some clarity and lightening the main lioness’s eyes. Finally pushing it through Topaz A1 Sharpen, which helped a bit with any noise.

Adrian, good nature image. Looking at your original image I see the colors washed out and the presence of 4 felines. Your PP brought some better color and detail, but left one of the felines amputated. Since the face of the fourth feline looking to the right (my right) of the frame is not sharp, I cropped it even tighter. Tried two options of crop in addition to work on the colors adding more blacks. Also made the horizontal straight.   Posted: 10/07/2021 17:01:53

Adrian, I agree with Isaac on the cropping and might have tried removing the right lion using content aware. The color and detail are good. Well done.   Posted: 10/18/2021 15:26:18

Adrian, I agree with you that your title summarizes the story you captured! I do agree with Isaac and Walt re: the cropping. I think the image Isaac edited with the tree more to the right is more effective than having the tree in the middle. I am so amazed at how close you were able to get!   Posted: 10/18/2021 15:50:16

This is a unique "pastel" presentation. This difference draws my eye into the image. I am seeing the head of a lion on the tree trunk. Obviously, this is an illusion because it is present in the original. Does anyone else see this "ghost"?   Posted: 10/18/2021 17:26:37

Adrian, for me the second crop from Isaac is the most effective because it draws attention to the the large lion and not the background and trees. I like the soft pastel color as well. Bruce   Posted: 10/18/2021 17:53:34
