About the Image(s)

Take at An An Creek National wildlife reserve near Wrangle Alaska. This is one of the only places where black bears and grizzlies co-exist. There are so many fish gathering to spawn in An An Creek that there is enough for both species. The black bear cubs here spend a lot of time in the nearby trees for safety. It is a very difficult place to photograph because of the lack of light and mist caused by the falls . It has been described as a hole with fish in it.

Bruce, this image proves that climbing a tree is not a good escape route if you see a black bear. It is incredible the agility of this animals to get up there and sleep comfortably.
Your PP brought out color and detail in the bears and vegetation, and made it straight. Great image. My only experience with a black bear, I was driving around Iron Mountain in the upper peninsula in Michigan and the young guy walked across the highway, I stoped, reversed, I had my camera next to me, and was able to get a couple of images before it went into the forest.   Posted: 06/02/2021 09:46:14

I just returned from the Grand Tetons, where both Black bears and Grizzlies co-exist. Although this year there seemed to be less Blacks than Grizzlies. Perhaps due to the overwhelming presence of people clamoring for bear 399 and her 4 cubs (Grizzlies). Nice title for the photo. It takes a lot of patience to try to get more than one bear to have their heads up and somewhat pointed to the camera. I totally understand your comments about difficult place to photograph. While I've found bears are out all times of the day, its still quite dark in forest areas, along with tree limbs in the way and other obstacles. And you really don't want to get too close.   Posted: 06/10/2021 09:52:51

Bruce, What a wonderful image! Your title lends itself to an interesting story about this little cub and its mama.   Posted: 06/14/2021 12:04:22

Thanks Marie, this is a great place to get images of bears in the trees. There is a viewing platform next to the falls and you can go below into a blind right next to the falls where the bears are gathering to catch fish. Tall trees surround the viewing platform and the cubs scamper up them when ever a male bear shows up. One time a bear was coming down from a tree which was right next to the viewing platform and go off inside the barrier. The rangers had to chase it out as we al watched.
