About the Image(s)
Here's a shot taken on a walk around St John's, Newfoundland last year. Our first port of call following a stormy voyage across from Liverpool. It was good to stretch the legs and we came across this vantage point looking back to the ship. It's a record shot but I just wanted to share it.

Nigel, that's no record shot. That is a well laid out, perfect exposure, great sky, very interesting sea / land scape. Well done.   Posted: 11/04/2023 17:45:14

Thanks Tom, I liked it when I saw it and still do. I appreciate your comments.   Posted: 11/05/2023 11:33:32

Nigel, this is a very nice scenery and is well exposed and I would consider it a "documentary" image. I like the sky. My concern is that the image is split 50/50 between the landscape and the sky and this create some uncertainty in the observer of what is the real subject: is this the sky or the landscape? Maybe a 16:9 crop cutting a little the sky would make the image stronger.
best wishes

Thanks Michele, I agree "documentary" rather than "record" is a better word. The point of focus is neither the sky nor the landscape for me. It is a documented image of St Johns, the city, the harbour, the waterway leading to the harbour and the vantage point from the top of Signal Hill. So, in a sense, some of the sky could go, but, like you - I like the sky as well. Thanks for your comments.   Posted: 11/05/2023 11:36:03
Very interesting composition. For me, the curve of the road in the foreground leads to the building that is closest and the spire of that building points directly to the cruise ship and the spread of the city.
The only recommendation I have for making it stronger is to tone down (or clone out) the white structure immeadiately to the right of the red cargo ship and the half ship on the edge of the frame.   Posted: 11/06/2023 04:41:09

I can't unsee the white blob now Theresa so it'll have to go! Thanks for your comments.   Posted: 11/07/2023 14:52:28

This is a very pretty, well-composed shot, perfectly executed. Makes me want to visit! And if it has that impact, I feel sure you've achieved your goal.   Posted: 11/07/2023 13:05:13

I like the composition of this image and it shows so much on a single capture. And the clouds leads eye to horizon. Good job!   Posted: 11/07/2023 23:55:39
Enjoyed the image overall. Would suggest adjusting to see what would happen if the sky took only the top 1/3.   Posted: 11/18/2023 17:30:50
