Autumn Reflections at Point Defiance by Theresa Rice

November 2023 - Autumn Reflections at Point Defiance

About the Image(s)

My first real visit to Point Defiance Park in Tacoma was during a camera club photo walk that happened two days after we got back from our road trip. The pond where this photograph was taken was our first stop. The branch of the brilliant red-orange tree was what first caught my attention and I found that using it to frame the reflections in the water was my favorite viewpoint.

Shot handheld on the Sony A7RIII with the Sony G-Master 50 mm art lens at f-5.6 and ISO 100 with a shutter speed of 1/250 seconds. Processed with an Outdoor Light preset in Radiant Photo, then refined in Lightroom, with a slight Gaussian blur added in Photoshop.

Theresa, first thing that strikes me as super is the fall red-orange colors at the top of the image and the second is the full reflection of the big tree in the pond. I Like the dark lead in of the bottom section and the curving rocky shoreline. Really communicates a message of fall. Great scape!   Posted: 11/04/2023 16:37:59

Theresa,

I think this is an interesting idea and an image the convey the feeling of the fall season. For my personal taste the red color of the tree in the upper part of the photo is a little bit too saturated. More the reflections in the water are brighter of the real tree that is dark in the image. I would consider to tone down a little the red and make reflections a little less bright.
Like very much your composition

Best

I like the way you've made the reflection more of the subject than the tree, but balanced that by accentuating the tree colours - very nice. Maybe just add a touch more vibrance to the tree in the reflection, it is just a bit pale compared to the main tree. Well composed too.   Posted: 11/05/2023 05:45:17

A really lovely image and beautifully composed. I do think the bright sunlit background in the distance is a little too bright, which tends to draw the eye there instead of into the pond and pretty leaves. I think doing a simple brush stroke in the background, and then lowering the exposure a stop or two would fix that problem.   Posted: 11/07/2023 06:57:51

It's a beautiful colorful image. I prefer the main figure to be the tree on the left and its reflection in the pond, and hopefully with bright red as the top.   Posted: 11/07/2023 17:17:28

Thank you all for your comments. I obviously need to spend a little more time on this image but I think it will be worth. (I wasn't sure.)   Posted: 11/13/2023 20:32:01

Love the tree and reflection on the left. Would love to see a variation that emphasizes it more (composition and perhaps exposure.)   Posted: 11/18/2023 11:27:52
