About the Image(s)

In the Shadow of Clouds is an image captured on the Washington side of the Columbia River between rain showers. We stopped to see the life-sized replica of Stonehenge and this scene grabbed my eye as I was climbing the hill for a better vantage on the monument.
Sony A7rIII with the Tamron 70-300 mm lens all the way out at 300 mm. f/6.3 at ISO 100 for 1/400 second on Intelligent Auto. Basic adjustments in LR with the following added in PS:
(1) added a multiply layer to darken the shadows,
(2) added a slight gaussian blur (3.2 pixels at 32% opacity), and
(3) used curves to increase the contrast and brighten the sky

A beautiful capture. We just returned from Orcas Island in the San Juans in your own state. On yours, I suggest cropping the bottom just a tiny fraction. There are a few light color leaves along the bottom that give the lower edge a ragged edge look. These brighter spots also tend to draw the eye away from an otherwise wonderful shot.   Posted: 06/04/2022 16:24:00

I see what you mean - Thanks, Mike. I'll do that.   Posted: 06/04/2022 17:53:18

Good composition, nice layout of front, mid, and back layers. Like your original thoughts of clouds with shades. I would try two shots with one focus on the front trees and one on the back to merge them with PS. Also patch the white spot inside the trees?   Posted: 06/15/2022 17:42:34

I agree with John about the white patch. A good balance of sky to subject and subject to foreground. Maybe a small crop off the bottom, even as far as the white spot to concentrate the focus on the lovely light in the mountains.   Posted: 06/22/2022 05:17:10
