Catho Colour Bomb by Terina Vale

June 2022 - Catho Colour Bomb

About the Image(s)

This location, Catherine Hill Bay and it’s iconic Jetty is one of my favourite spots to go to for a sunrise shoot. The jetty was built in 1873 and was used to load coal up to 2002, it is now listed on the State Heritage Register, with the top section cordoned off to the public due to it starting to fall apart.

I used a long exposure so that I could obtain the smooth water look and I also love the movement of the sky.

Post processing - The image was taken about 15 minutes before sunrise and the foreground is quite dark in the raw image, so it has been brightened in Photoshop quite a bit. I also use the Nik’s detail extractor, especially in the foreground and sunlight to give it that warm glow.

This image was taken on Saturday 5 June 2022, with the following equipment and settings:
Canon EOS R
Canon 16-35 f/4 L IS USM lens
Suri Tripod

20.00 mm focal length
97.0 sec exposure
f/14
100 “ ISO
Single image

Welcome to our PSA DD group.
Fantastic first image. Very moody, colorful, mysterious... Nice lines, perspective, depth, and milky water effect with this long exposure. I do not have any suggestions on how to improve this beautiful image.

Whatever improvements you have made to the out of camera image have created a spectacular image that I'd love to have in my living room.   Posted: 06/18/2022 13:07:35

The long exposure is just perfect here with this shot. The colors and the exposure make for a gorgeous shot. No suggestions.

I'm glad you mentioned you used Nik detail extractor. I'm curious about what products people use for their processing.   Posted: 06/23/2022 21:39:41

Hi Terina, welcome to the club. My first impression you are an experienced photographer. You really know what you want to tell the stories to your viewers.

It's a single shot with 97 sec exposure. You make me learn how to edit the foreground by using NIK detail extractor. I found it's an awesome approach. You adjust the detail and the warm of the color all in one layer. I believe you mask it to apply it partially.

Awesome shot and I just love your finished image. Nice work Terina.
