About the Image(s)

Huangshan – China

Canon EOS 6D, EF24-105mm @ 24 mm, ¼ sec at f/16, ISO 100.

This is one of the scenic and famous destination in China. Huangshan means Yellow Mountain. The best time to visit is during winter. I took this image in December 2013. The image has been sitting in my HD for years, waiting for me to learn how to effectively perform post processing. That’s one of my points to include ‘Before’ and ‘After’ edit images here.

The new sky selection in PS and LR just enable us to edit this kind of image easier. The key issues, to me, is to decide which part of the image and and what kind of adjustment that are appropriate. I edited the sky and the foreground separately. The challenge is (always) to refrain from over editing. Part of my learning process is to get inputs and comments from fellow photography friends like you all in this group. Please feel free to comments.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

I love the sky selection tool in LR and can see how useful it was in editing this image. I am assuming that adjustment defined the background mountains as well. It is a challenging image with such light contrast. The foreground trees/shrubs seem a little too warm. I think I would trying reducing the color warmth in that area, and bringing up the shadows in the crevasse of the right mountain. A difficult image for process and I think you handled it well.   Posted: 12/06/2021 11:19:48

Hi Mary, thanks for your comments. Indeed, the foreground tree is a bit too warm. And, I am still not happy with the sky edit it start to show halos when it meet trees.   Posted: 12/12/2021 20:06:52

Hi Frans,
How lucky you were to travel to China. We saw similarly dramatic scenery on a Li River cruise back in the late 80s.
This is a beautiful shot, and I have one question (not quite a suggestion, because I am not sure). I think the rise of the mountain on the left is the main subject, and it is slightly diminished by including the small mountain on the right. What do you think about cropping off the right 30% or so? I am really not sure about this, but just exploring the idea. What about flipping the image right-to-left? Again, I am not sure, just exploring.   Posted: 12/26/2021 17:27:08

Hi Steven, I really appreciate your thought. Let me try that and see what's the result. It takes me a while as in the process of reorganizing my images into the new computer.   Posted: 12/30/2021 15:42:44
