Nightscape over Mobius Arch by San Yuan

October 2021 - Nightscape over Mobius Arch

About the Image(s)

Attached file, “ Nightscape over Mobius Arch” was taken in Nov of 2017 at the popular Mobius Arch, at the foothills of Mt. Whitney. The area is called Alabama Hills where lots of sandstone rock formations had created an almost moonscape look. Many western movies in the 1960s were shot there.

The shot was taken with a wide angle 12mm lens at F/4 for 20 seconds. I believe the ISO setting is around 3200.

Beautiful. You nailed it! I am assuming that you added some light from behind the arch (or was it a car passing by...). Very nice directing lines - nicely demonstrated anchoring point but still maintaining nice exposure for the milky way.   Posted: 10/14/2021 08:17:20

Thanks for your thoughtful and kind comment. To light up the arch, I placed a LCD light panel on a small tripod and placed behind the arch. I probably should have tone down the intensity of the light a bit. I found it to be too bright.   Posted: 10/16/2021 18:05:04

I agree with you. You need to tune down in PS a bit to make look more natural.   Posted: 10/17/2021 04:56:05

Excellent shot and composition between the arc and the milky way. Like Pierre, I was wondering how did you get the back light behind the arc.   Posted: 10/15/2021 21:58:59

Can't beat the composition. That is just gorgeous and I like the lighting behind the arch. This place is on my bucket list and I did buy some special lights to use. I think you may have gotten a bit more clarity using a faster lens, F2.8 rather than F4. Also, did you take a separate shot for the arch at a longer exposure (with less light intensity) and then combine? Sometimes that helps with clarity on the rock.   Posted: 10/17/2021 15:05:38

Just a fantastic image! I am hard pressed to suggest anything more. The light behind the arch comes off just right to my eye - makes it appear that the trail of stars is emanating from the maw of this beast!   Posted: 10/26/2021 08:53:09
