Sunrise over Lago Grey by San Yuan

June 2021 - Sunrise over Lago Grey

About the Image(s)

“The image was captured on the ground of Hotel Lago Grey, Torres del Paine, Chile. The fall season was the perfect time visiting the national park, as the tourists are pretty much all gone by early May. The sky and cloud formations at Torres del Paine are famous for their ever changing shapes as the wind is usually fierce. This particular morning, I was watching this large bird flying back and forth from his nest and to another nearby tree. I captured it with a much higher ISO and shutter speed and then merged it with another image with a lower ISO immediately afterwards. Technical details: Sony 7RM2, 18mm, F/8, 0.8 sec for the landscape image.”

Another grand landscape San! Look for the Light; find the shadows and you will find the design. Gorgeous alpen glow with soft cloud movement providing dynamic energy made possible by your previsualization of image and your conscious involvement choosing the shutter speed. The golden rosy glow juxtaposed next to the angular wild and raw mountains provide a balance and add depth beyond the colorful foreground. You've set a lovely stage for the actor, the bird, to enter. Good choice, and well placed in the scene to contrast from the sky. Pleasing color palette. Well seen, executed and processed.   Posted: 06/20/2021 17:34:29

I just love the color harmony, composition and the finished look. the horizon is a bit slanted to my eyes. I am not sure if our friends also observe the same. Otherwise, it's totally awesome to me.   Posted: 06/23/2021 04:23:36

Simply wonderful. Everything is lovely: depth of field, directing lines, tones, mood, clouds, snow-covered mountain tips, a lake.... wow...
I agree with Frans that the horizon looked a little slanted. I am not 100% sure about the bird. Although the bird is fairly sharp, I find it distracting and not really adding anything to this gorgeous sunrise.   Posted: 06/23/2021 11:06:23

What an exceptional landscape! The colorful trees carry the colors of the clouds quite nicely, and the snow covered mountains over and across the water makes a perfect focal point. I am undecided on the bird. From your comments I know that the bird was an integral element in your mind, but to my eye it upsets what is otherwise a perfect balance and harmony. If I were judging , the version without the bird would score a little higher.   Posted: 06/24/2021 10:37:58

You timed it for the light perfectly. I've been to that area and I think that may be a condor. Yep, the horizon is off a bit and I think a bit can be cropped off of the right hand side. Other than that it is gorgeous.   Posted: 06/24/2021 16:31:43

Thank you all for your encouraging comments. I do agree that the image was tilted. The condor could be removed as some suggested. Here is the image with a flat horizon and without the condor.   Posted: 06/27/2021 01:14:13
