Beware of this Pier by Kathryn Engle

June 2021 - Beware of this Pier

About the Image(s)

Beware of going out on this pier. Tried a bit of focus stacking, but since the two images didn’t align up well, did it by hand to restrict what and where to mask. Then added a bit of contrast and a little burning and dodging. A couple of shots at ISO 250, 28mm, 1/500 sec at f/9. Taken on a walk in Benicia, CA while waiting for my trailer to get fixed.

I love the linear graphic qualities of this dock and the fence and particularly the lines, curve and shape of the dock question mark. I believe that graphic aspect is its strong point and could be emphasized by cropping up from the bottom; IMHO you only need a few inches of the top of the fence to ID what it is and form a base line to ground the question mark. Perhaps that even makes it a square image with a lovely color palette. The greenish/yellow tones and brown leaf litter detract from that palette. I'm so glad to see a controlled access door on the dock to the questionable neverland beyond!   Posted: 06/22/2021 18:24:56

I love the lighting and the way you include the fence as the foreground. I would likely remove the tree and the roof so the viewer eyes would follow the unique board walk. I think you have successfully apply burning and dodging to this image.   Posted: 06/23/2021 04:45:23

Hi Kathryn,
Nicely done. I would also crop the bottom a little, but I love the guiding lines. I am not sure about the tree as it takes a lot of space... Maybe getting a little closer to the fence and to the right would have helped.   Posted: 06/23/2021 11:13:59

I think the tree is beneficial to the composition. It provides scale and some clues to the environment; we're not seeing the leafy top of a tree but an aspect of a large base tree trunk. It's growing right by the fence. The roof top we see has no visible sidewalls, so we are looking down on it from above. I must conclude that it's a very steep slope down to the dock, it's low tide, and the tidal range is quite large.   Posted: 06/23/2021 16:11:53
