About the Image(s)

The image this month was taken at one of our local nature parks-a momma duck and her four little ducklings.
The image was flipped and cropped. Sharpening, a vignette, some color correction, and slightly blurring the greenery. The color in the greenery was reduced to accent the ducklings.

f/9, 1/1000 sec, iso 1250, focal len 550mm

Adorable! Candy, these are Mottled Ducks, aren't they? Beautiful job lightening the duckling faces and adding catchlights in the ducklings' eyes.

What is your trick for adding catch lights since it doesn't look like the ducklings had them?   Posted: 11/05/2021 20:55:47

Yes, they are mottled ducks. The catch lights were there and were brought out with lightening the image. To add catchlights I usually pick an off white color, and add to the eye or eyes with a small brush.   Posted: 11/13/2021 13:26:38

Babies are adorable. I believe that these are Mallard ducks chicks and mother. On my screen, and the limited amounts of details offered with this low resolution, I have the impression that the duckling in the front is a little soft. I like the desaturation of the background so the chicks and mom are "popping up".   Posted: 11/09/2021 10:47:06

The ducks are mottled ducks. The female has similar coloring to the female mallard.   Posted: 11/13/2021 13:27:47

The four ducklings are so cute. Yes, the front duckling is still a little soft but is part of the story.
I might amputate the mothers neck a bit more. This will help to eliminate some of the dead space in the upper right.   Posted: 11/09/2021 15:20:28

I love the four chicks. The rear end of the mother does not add much for me. Always difficult to get wildlife to pose properly.   Posted: 11/14/2021 15:43:07

Cute little characters nicely exposed and focused except for the little one in the foreground. I would possible crop the top a little to bring out the feathers in mum only and focus a little more on the chicks. Just a thought.   Posted: 11/14/2021 18:40:04

Candy, great capture. Yes the front chick is soft even at f/9 due to the shallow DOF @ 500 mm. The rest of the ducklings and mother are very sharp. Your PP did bring out color and detail. I think that the amputated mother is taking too much space competing with the main subject. A tighter crop still keeps the story, making the little ducks stand out much better.   Posted: 11/17/2021 09:11:17

This is an amazing capture. The color corrections you did really help to bring focus to the ducks. I do agree with the others that cropping more to push focus on the ducklings could help the photo.   Posted: 11/29/2021 22:11:30
