Yellow Footed Rock Wallaby by Geoff Wiggins, FAPS

October 2021 - Yellow Footed Rock Wallaby

About the Image(s)

My next post. Yellow Footed Rock Wallaby. Caught 5pm as the creatures come down for a drink out of a small spring. They are really shy and I just caught this one hiding in the shade of the trees. 1/2000. F5.6. 500mm ISO 800. The light was fading hence the increased exposure. I don’t like using ISO 800 but don’t think I had any other choice.

Geoff, he's amazing! How incredible to have these near you.

The light really lights up his gold, which is so gorgeous. I'd be tempted to lighten around his eyes and top of his face, so we can connect with him. The way the light is falling, it would be natureal and would still be allowed in PSA Nature competitions.

I'll be interested in whether others think some of the brighter spots in the background should be burned down more, I like what you have now, as it goes with how contrasty the light was at the time and lends a magical feel to the area. Almost feels like a Hobbit movie set.

You don't say what camera you are using, but the newer ones are good to 3200 ISO or so before it is even an issue. And Topaz DeNoise AI will take care of any amount of noise, especially the newest version.

So glad you shared a yellow footed rock wallaby with us!

Thanks Brenda. I do have a Nikon D850. With this model Nikon has used a new process that reduces the problem of higher ISO's and noise. It is a system they are not talking about. I can go as high as ISO 25,600. Up to ISO 400 there is next to no noise beyond that it starts to creep in.

You always have such interesting images, Geoff. This rock footed wallaby is another. The lighting on the animal brings out the colors of its fur so nicely. I would be tempted to lighten the shadows just on the wallaby. Good work.   Posted: 10/11/2021 15:08:17

Very lovely image. My only suggestion would be to lighten the background a tad.
I would love to get these animals in my backyard!   Posted: 10/13/2021 16:53:19

Thanks Pierre I agree with your comment, thanks. Yes they are great little characters, I will send a few over your way. Not the yellow footed but some people do have the other kangaroos as pets.   Posted: 10/13/2021 17:56:44

Once again it is wonderful to see your unique fauna. The light on his fur is just gorgeous. Thank you for including the environment to show us where these animals live.   Posted: 10/14/2021 15:43:20
