Blue Heron Chicks by Mervyn Hurwitz

June 2021 - Blue Heron Chicks

About the Image(s)

Blue Heron chicks practicing sibling rivalry. About 6 weeks old and soon before leaving the nest. As you can see the parents are not around very much - probably out fishing.

Canon 40D 250mm ISO 640. f8, 1/800 secs on a tripod.

I love this, Mervyn! Where did you find them? Cuteness overload! Do you have your original? I'd love to see what changes you made, as you didn't mention what you did. It's great that you had a dark background behind their fluffy heads! Their eyes and white head seem a bit bright, but it may be my monitor. I'll wait to see what the real birding experts say.   Posted: 06/05/2021 20:57:06

Nice pic Mervyn, great to see them interacting, it has made the shot. Background very suitable to make the birds stand out, lighting has shown the birds off well.   Posted: 06/05/2021 21:44:51

Brenda, thanks for your comments. I have included the original, taken at Wakodahatchee wetlands (where we took you on your last visit to this area.)
I cropped to a vertical, darkened the background using "multiply" in the history brush( about 35%), added brightness to the eyes using the radial filter in camera raw. Sharpened in Topaz Sharpen AI. I decided not to remove the branch in front of the left bird in case I enter into the nature division.   Posted: 06/06/2021 10:39:46

Nice action with the chicks, Mervyn. Good contrast with the chicks and dark background behind their heads. Nice detail and texture in the feathers. The open beaks add to the interest of the image.   Posted: 06/07/2021 15:02:27

Great catch with the two chicks mirroring one another. This one could definitely be contest material.   Posted: 06/08/2021 13:36:29
