White Egret with Catch by Mervyn Hurwitz

May 2021 - White Egret with Catch

About the Image(s)

Taken at our local rookery, where the birds are very active at the moment raising young chicks in the nests. This Egret caught a Moorhen chick to feed to its young.
Canon 40D Tamron 150-600 mm at 483mm
ISO 640, f8, 1/4000secs Exposure comp. -0.7

I used ISO 640 as it was early in the morning and had not yet lowered the ISO as I should have. I reduced the noise in Topaz Denoise AI and also used Topaz Sharpener AI

Awesome capture, Mervyn! I love the shot and I didn't know Egrets fed other chicks to their chicks! the reflection is fabulous.

The stems behind the bird's tail are a bit blurred, perhaps darken them a bit? I might add a bit of a vignette.

I think this is my favorite Mervyn photo! Excellent.   Posted: 05/07/2021 20:48:26

Well done Mervyn, I don't think I can find anything to comment on that would improve the shot, well positioned, sharp, the bird is doing something namely eating its young, lighting ie perfect.   Posted: 05/09/2021 00:48:22

Lovely image. The image reflection is just wonderful. Fantastic breeding colors on this great egret. Very nice display of the feathers - almost like a dentelle. Maybe adding a little more light on the poor victim would help?

Marvyn,

Great clarity and lovely reflection with the rippled water. And the bird was captured doing somethin interesting. Very nice.   Posted: 05/10/2021 20:18:26

Thanks for all the positive comments. I was a little disturbed by the messy background, but that's where it was. As for the meal/chick, it is totally black and I lightened as much as possible without creating too much noise.   Posted: 05/12/2021 14:07:22

Mervyn, you captured a beautiful bird and beautiful reflection. The fact that the bird is doing something is a plus. As for the background, it is nature, that is where it was.   Posted: 05/14/2021 13:39:09

This is an amazing picture. I will say I am unsure if the background is blurry or if it is the ripples and the reflection creating that effect. Ether way it is still a very nice shot.   Posted: 05/15/2021 21:40:27
