Hummingbird by Michael Weatherford

August 2022 - Hummingbird

About the Image(s)

I shot this photo yesterday, August 1 2022 in our wildflower meadow in South Arkansas using my "old" camera, a Pentax K-1 with Pentax 300mm f4 lens. 1/320; f5.6; ISO 640. Hand held.
My Facebook friends raved about this one but I've got a feeling you guys will be somewhat more critical. I think the bird's pose, sitting on a stick and feeding from the obedient plant flower is more interesting than many other hummingbird portraits I've seen. I like the background a lot. Processed in Lightroom, heavily cropped, used the sliders to adjust exposure, highlights, shadows, white and black points. Used the Mask - Select Subject option, then inverted the mask to darken the background. Added vignette.

Michael: I like this shot too. The bird has nice feather detail with a soft surround. It is unusual to find a hummingbird finding a perfect perch to sip from a flower. I might have taken out the individual stick pointing at the bird's head as distracting. Nice shot!   Posted: 08/05/2022 11:13:22

This is quite lovely. It is far from the usual hummer photos usually posted. This carries a moody, dream-like secret feel that makes it quite original. That original concept is what makes this something special. In this case the blurred flower in the lower right, far from being a distraction add to the mood. The vertical line of the flower from which the bird is feeding works to connect the viewer. As has been noted, if you could flawlessly remove that branch point to the bird's head this would be incredible. Minus that branch, as a judge I would vote to move this to an award round.

Really excellent work.   Posted: 08/07/2022 13:42:29

Great capture. Good and sharp. Love the soft colors in the background. The only time you usually see a Hummingbird feeding from a setting position is on a feeder, I like this.   Posted: 08/10/2022 09:07:10
