About the Image(s)

A shot of the crazy sky at Cades Cove in the Smoky Mountains; horizonal cloud layers, diagonal streaks and two cloud dollops in the scene Workflow: I used NIK Silver Efex for BW, a little detail extractor, dodging and burning the clouds using LR filters. I added a few inches to the canvas bottom to add land mass and used a square crop to reign the sky expanse.
Camera: 590nm Canon 5D, 70-200mm Canon f2.8 L lens at 70mmmm, 1/100 sec at f16,
ISO 100 +0 EV

Hi Emil,

Perfect title...and the image overall reminds me of a fine art painting. Well done. Excellent control of the contrast and the blacks and whites.   Posted: 05/01/2023 09:13:51

Wow, amazing clouds. Yes, the clouds made an interesting and beautiful subject. I like the inclusion of the mountain range at the bottom. It anchors the scene. The exposure is handled well too.

Hi Emil
Unique capture of clouds which is awesome. Post processing very well handled. As Arik says, the mountainous foreground adds to the scene. 10/10!!   Posted: 05/05/2023 05:17:50

Hi Emil,
IR photographers know the power of clouds and you have shown them in an absolutely fascinating way. There just enough base to hold it all together. So well seen and beautifully processed.   Posted: 05/07/2023 11:46:10

I love interesting clouds in IR and this is why. Excellent processing and adding to the mountains was a great choice. Print it!   Posted: 05/07/2023 15:51:21

Emil, clouds, splendid clouds, full of life and energy clouds. We should be doing more IR work on clouds. I like what you did to increase the tonality and micro-contrast. My eye wants to see a little more detail in the shadows, but I can see why you darken the hilly region to better define the clouds as your subject. Thanks for sharing. Thanks for the inspiration to look up.   Posted: 05/08/2023 21:08:54

I've often wanted to take pictures of just clouds and skies, Emil, and you've shown a good approach, by including a bit of land at the bottom. Making this a silhouette works as it doesn't distract from the cloudscape. As we've often mentioned, putting a small white line frame around your image would help, as it is hard to see where the image ends and the black background of the web page begins.   Posted: 05/09/2023 00:51:16
