About the Image(s)

My “postcard” of Virginia City, Nevada, in the snow. Did you notice the cemetery at foreground?
As much of the image is of the same tone, I’m wondering if it works as so.

Hi Jack
You always come up with fantastic skies, and this one is no exception. And yes, I did notice the cemetery in the foreground.
Having said that, I'd have concentrated just on the cloud formation. The picture as it stands seems somewhat divided. Sorry!   Posted: 06/02/2022 18:03:55

I'm seeing an older image with the caption for my current one, so, Pallis comments notwithstanding, it's either an issue with my browser, or might be addressed by Melanie.   Posted: 06/02/2022 21:37:37

Hi Jack
You've done very well in terms of portraying the scene as well as the post-processing. There's so much going on within the image which makes it more interesting.
Having said that I was tempted to work on the selected areas of highlights in the mountainous range ... which I did. Am attaching my version with subtle adjustments to see what you think!

Subtle adjustments, as you say Palli, but it does make an improvement, thanks!   Posted: 06/06/2022 17:46:48

This is a terrific scene for IR, especially monochrome IR. I do think it would benefit from an increase in contrast and a bit of dodging and burning. I went ahead and made a few adjustments of my own including a slight vignette.   Posted: 06/06/2022 10:47:08

Thank you Henry, I think your version improves, especially the overall darkening.   Posted: 06/06/2022 17:45:36

Hi Jack. My view is different than the others. I agree with your thinking that this may not be the best scene for a B&W IR. Your composition and processing are good and the scene is interesting, but as you suggested, the important items get lost. The higher-contrast versions here concentrated on the mountains and the sky, but I believe that you wanted to focus on the town.   Posted: 06/06/2022 15:11:29

You make an excellent point, Arik, I appreciate it.   Posted: 06/07/2022 10:27:01

Jack, including the cemetery compels a provocative comparison between the distant houses with the tombstones. Taking IR photographs in the winter, I've found, can be a challenge. I like the suggestions of the others concerning increasing contrast and tonality to handle the flatness issue you raised.   Posted: 06/06/2022 15:48:41

Thanks Charles and thanks for taking the time to comment this month even though you did not submit an image yourself.   Posted: 06/07/2022 10:27:51

Hi Jack,

You've got all the elements...foreground, mid-ground and background. It's a classic rendering that is sharp and detailed. For my tastes, it's lacking contrast or a broader range of tonality for IR, knowing full well that's extremely difficult in snow! I do like Henry's version.   Posted: 06/08/2022 08:19:12

Hi Jack, I do think that you have something here. There are many interesting elements. I am going to say something sacrilegious in IR circles - how about removing most of the sky so we can concentrate on the village. I would also crop out on the left at the first tree. Then I think the tonality works just fine.   Posted: 06/08/2022 08:42:14

Good point Melanie I see that leaving just a sliver of sky acts to frame it and refocus attention on the village.   Posted: 06/08/2022 20:30:15

Jack

Love the shot, there is interest for my eye from top to bottom. it has grandeur and majesty

It does need a little something more. I think adding contrast along Henry's offering is something I endorse
