About the Image(s)

This is an image of lava flowing to the North Sea from the recently active Fagradalsfjall volcano in Iceland. By the time I arrived it no longer was erupting but the lava was spilling out over the lip of the crater. Like many landscapes in Iceland, this one is barren and lifeless. To establish a sense of scale, I included the distant sea and replaced the sky. I removed hikers because they were too small to discern. Because my Nik Collection 4 program crashed, I processed the image only in PS 2021. Camera data: Nikon D7000 (590nm filter), f/18, 1/125, 24mm, ISO=400.

Charles,

Well seen. You have captured the scale so well. The Sun rays are really needed in this barren landscape. I will never get to Iceland so I thank you for bringing it to me.

Good job

Beautifully composed and executed. I admire your post-processing and the way you have brought out those sun rays. Definitely exhibition material. Also, one for the wall!!   Posted: 10/02/2021 00:36:19

Chuck, You are continuing to bring us fabulous pictures from Iceland. Well done on the processing. Nik is not always the answer! Adding the sky was a must. It's a wonderful sky, but I wonder if it is overwhelming the volcano drama just a bit.
This must have been awesome in color too.   Posted: 10/03/2021 17:49:30

Stunning, Charles...an award-winning image in my book.
Here's what it looks like with Detail Extractor applied to it from Color Efex Pro (DxO). See if the plug-in adds value to you in the impact.   Posted: 10/03/2021 18:47:06

Your adjustment does add more pop. I will replicate it. Thank you Gary.   Posted: 10/09/2021 20:58:21

I enjoyed that there is so much going on here, Charles. The sky does steal the show, fwiw. And as the sea is apparent in the original, I don't quite understand that part of your caption.

But You've created a compelling scene, well done.   Posted: 10/03/2021 20:36:39

For the sake of brevity, Melanie shortened the caption. I sent her the caption "Fagradalsfjall Volcano Seabound Lava"   Posted: 10/09/2021 21:03:48

Actually, Charles, I had misread the caption (thinking you cloned in the sea). I think you would have still had a compelling image just by cropping down into the bare sky a bit, but I understand the creative license!   Posted: 10/14/2021 14:22:27

Beautiful scene and picture. The sky added impact. I may add some highlights to the landscape to be consistent with the sun rays.   Posted: 10/03/2021 21:15:54
