About the Image(s)

The picture was taken in a local park. My Nikon D300 is converted with a 720nm filter. The flower was shot at 55mm (82mm eqiv), ISO 200, F9, 1/320 sec. After the initial tonal adjustments in ACR, post processing in Photoshop included minor cropping, channel swapping, selective tone adjustment, adding a light vignette, and some cloning of dark spots on the petals. The placement of the flower in the lower part of the frame was to keep the delicate details in the foreground and let everything fade into the soft background.

It's an interesting and original take on a colorful flower, Arik. The softness of the background lends to a sense of mood.

Because there is so little detail in the background, however, there is also very little sense of depth, so I really don't have that "flower in a field" feel, if that's what you were after, but rather more of a flower on a canvas, more 2D. For me, I find that cropping down about 1/4 or 1/3, to the top of two darker seed heads, remedies this, and gives me the depth that I was looking for, and becomes very enjoyable.   Posted: 09/01/2021 17:36:04

I second Jack's comment. I think a simple crop of the top and call it a nice day.

Hi Arik
You've done full justice in portraying this delicate flower with shallow depth-of-field. The softness adds to the beauty.
I tend agree with Jack and Emil, re: crop.

Arik...

My very first impression of this...HOW DID ARIK manage two completely different tones of white in the flower versus the foliage all around it. It's almost as if the color temperatures were different on the bloom versus all the rest. It has immediate impact in my opinion and is strong due to its simplicity and stunning presentation.   Posted: 09/05/2021 16:22:51

Arik, such a sublime image, elegant and understated. I like the cool soft blue noticeable in the petals of the flower. The cropping accomplished putting the flower in foreground allowing the background to fade softly away.   Posted: 09/11/2021 21:25:31

Hi Arik
You have captured one of my favorite flowers. Cosmos in a field is just lovely as is your image. Although the bloom is crisp, there is a translucence to it against the muted background. I do agree that a small amount cropping from the top enhances your presentation.   Posted: 09/12/2021 19:46:47
