About the Image(s)

The picture was taken in Chinatown, NYC, with a Nikon D300 converted with a 720nm filter. It was shot at 50mm (75mm eqiv), ISO 400, F8, 1/60 sec. After the initial tonal adjustments in ACR, including local darkening of the highlights, post processing in Photoshop included noise reduction, sharpening, and minor transformation to straighten lines. The b&w conversion was done in NIK Silver Efex Pro 2.

I haven't been to NYC since January, 2020. I hope to go back soon.   Posted: 06/09/2021 11:18:52

Hello Arik,

A classic imho! Really tells me the story of Waiting For Customers. The tonality and your care and attention in insuring it is impeccable. This is a 'steet' or a 'people' image of high merit.   Posted: 06/02/2021 09:14:34

Hi Arik
An amusing street shot that tells the story. Post processing, including composition, spot on. Like it lots.   Posted: 06/03/2021 00:41:30

While too often titles detract rather than contribute to an image, here, the title is essential and works to complete the image, as Emil's reaction shows. Also, your processing seems to have lessened the infrared effects and presented more of a classic black and white image, which I appreciate. The tonalities and subtle shadows are beautiful. I also like the empty chair on the end as an accent. Very well done.   Posted: 06/05/2021 12:22:19

Thanks, Jack. I use IR for street photography, because I like the way IR makes skin tones lighter and brings out details in shaded areas. I also shoot with my regular cameras.   Posted: 06/09/2021 11:23:34

Arik, such a well-composed, masterfully processed image. The depth of field rendered by F8 enriches the image with details and textures. You are an inspiration to take more of these street shots. I have the lenses for it, but not the courage.   Posted: 06/06/2021 15:51:30

Thanks, Charles. For so many years I avoided photographing people, especially strangers. About 20 years ago, a street photographer gave us a presentation and told us to try and ask a few strangers to take their picture and see how flattered and supportive they'll be. It's all about the way you do it. Now, I teach it in my street photography workshops.   Posted: 06/06/2021 18:00:27

Arik, My first reaction was also a smile. This really catches the eye. I like what you included when you shot it. The empty chair just adds to the scene and the right is cropped perfectly. The story telling aspect is wonderful. But, most of all, your foreground man is captured so well. IR has smoothed out some features, but your processing enhances them. Your conversion works really well. Love it!   Posted: 06/09/2021 10:16:39
