Dandelion puff by Jeff Fleisher

July 2021 - Dandelion puff

About the Image(s)

I just purchased the Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 micro lens for my mirrorless Z6 camera. I ran out to get an image for this month and saw this dandelion puff flower along the side of my driveway. It was shot at ISO 400, f/16 at 1/50 sec. I did some basic tonal adjustments and added some dynamic contrast in the small details via On1 Photo Raw

Jeff, You are showing us really interesting image. I like the way the curves of he puff interact with each other and the lines of the Anthers and Ligules. To my thinking, your image has a close to ethereal quality that would not be present if your image was tack sharp. Its abstract quality keeps me looking and I see something different every time. Just a nit. I thought that the image would benefit if it had a little more pop. So I played with your image in Photoshop: and lowered contrast by .14, to bring out a bit more tonal variety; and applied a curve adjustment.   Posted: 07/16/2021 14:34:03

Hi Peter,

Thanks for you comments and your version of the image. I went back and forth a number of times on how 'crisp' to make the image. I like the upper 2/3 of the image you created but I tried to stay away from increasing the detail in the lower left corner. To my eye, I like the softer look.   Posted: 07/28/2021 21:13:46

How soft or sharp to make an image is always the artist's choice. I'm sure you noticed that I applied no sharpening at all.   Posted: 07/28/2021 21:56:37

I agree with both of you regarding the need to sharpen the image. As presented it has a nice ethereal feel to it. Adding a bit of sharpen aids the viewer in focusing on interesting areas but detracts from the ethereal feel. I can understand the quandary you experienced in deciding how to proceed.

Personally I prefer Peter's version, but the image has a lot going for it as presented, and in the end it's your opinion that matters here.   Posted: 07/29/2021 11:03:56
