Signs by Jerry Snyder

November 2021 - Signs

About the Image(s)

The scene is from the sidewalk outside of the Philadelphia Zoo. I found the combination of threatening looking fence points, power lines for the trains, and bare tree branches interesting. The fence in particular reminded me of a line in the song by the Five Man Electrical Band titled Signs, “Do you put up the signs to keep me out or to keep mother nature in?” It was a humorous thought. The direction of the points on the fence points to keeping people out rather than keeping the zoo animals in. The image was taken with a Nikon Coolpix P500 1/250 sec., f/7.1, ISO 160 at 17.7 mm focal length (35 mm equivalent 100 mm).

Jerry, a most interesting image. I thought for a second that you were playing under the high voltage wires, just to "get the shot". The fence definitely tells the story of keeping you out!   Posted: 11/09/2021 09:53:27

Excellent story in this image. However visually it doesn't work for me particularly well maybe if it was even a little bit more abstract it would work better somehow or another I want to see more by opening up shadows or by there being less in the image.   Posted: 11/17/2021 11:01:37

My first impression of this was war - beach landings or something similar. Alas the power lines blow that idea pretty quickly, which seemed a pity to me. Equally the bare branches seem to detract from the very graphic silhouette of the fence. In fact, thinking more about it, if only those branches weren't there, then the story of the fence keeping people away from the power lines would have much more punch. This could be edited - a bit of a tedious job - but perhaps another viewpoint nearby could be found?   Posted: 11/18/2021 01:59:22

A strikingly bold B&W, which I like, but there are too many elements for my taste, too. I usually go for minimalism and would prefer it without the trees. Possibly the power lines, too. But there'd be no reason for the power poles which I find interesting.   Posted: 11/20/2021 19:15:16

This image would have greater impact on me if it was simplified to only show the fence. It reminds me of trench warfare in WW I.   Posted: 11/21/2021 08:40:52
