Fading Barn by Don York

September 2021 - Fading Barn

About the Image(s)

"Fading Barn" was taken, after I saw the barn while driving home and pulled over for a further examination. Essentially abandoned, but still standing. Image was taken with Sony RX100-M3, at 20mm. 1/400 sec, f4.0, ISO 125.

I think this is a classic mono photograph, the way I always strived to get a print in wet print days, with lots of greys from black to white. Great!

Delapidated buildings make interesting subjects provided there's something to lift the picture from just a photo of a dilapidated building, and here I think the tree on the right makes a big contribution. It doesn't jump out at me, but once noticed after taking in the picture, I think it adds depth and focus.

I'm glad you placed it a bit off-centre, and its height is clearly depicted. The trees at the front obscure that interesting face a little, but nothing you could do about that.   Posted: 09/05/2021 02:04:06

I like the tonality, composition, and the story this image tells. Everything works for me.   Posted: 09/06/2021 14:03:43

I agree with John and think this will be standing many more years. I hope you had time to capture close up details as I would.   Posted: 09/08/2021 15:05:54

The window through the door provided the most interest to me. I also like the textures and patterns of the weatherning. Nicely done.

I really enjoy old buildings. This is a good one with the light and shadow and the contrasting textures of the grass, bricks, weathered wood, and the filigree of white branches. So glad you stopped to capture and to share it with us.   Posted: 09/23/2021 14:19:09
