Waterfall and Pool by Jerry Snyder

July 2021 - Waterfall and Pool

About the Image(s)

The image is from a photography workshop in New York State in the fall of 2019. There was not much flow from the waterfall. The textures on the rock walls and water caught my interest. The conditions were overcast with intermittent rain. The exposure settings were ISO 100, f/11, 2 seconds using a tripod-mounted Canon 6D. Tonal adjustments, cropping, and conversion to monochrome were made using Lightroom 6. Resizing was performed using Faststone.

The foreground rocks add depth and anchor the image. The large, flat one echos the shape just above the rivulet of water (like an animal with the water coming from its mouth) tho a bit of darkening would keep it from dominating the image. I like the many textures and the fact that your longish exposure gave substance to the trickle of water. Well seen and sharp throughout. Well done.   Posted: 07/01/2021 20:01:18

Interesting composition of contrasting elements.   Posted: 07/08/2021 21:46:08

You chose the right day, with little wind enabling a great reflection in the water. The large rock in foreground could use a little burning as it has lost detail.   Posted: 07/10/2021 15:38:22

The wispy little waterfall allows us to enjoy the layers and textures of the rock wall. We need a strong foreground object, but that one light rook with little texture may not be the best choice. There are a lot of rocks and I think a crop from the bottom to remove most of this rock might improve the image. Just darkening it is not likely to solve it, unless you can also bring out more texture in it.   Posted: 07/19/2021 14:16:01

My thoughts are similar to Stan's comments. My eye stops at the foreground so a good crop will help the viewer move beyond as well as consider toning down the remaining foreground racks.   Posted: 07/19/2021 17:27:14

Personally, I like the rocks so much that if I cropped,I'd eliminate the tiny waterfall.   Posted: 07/21/2021 17:35:36
