Wooden Church Ceiling, Chiloe, Chile by Helen Sweet

May 2021 - Wooden Church Ceiling, Chiloe, Chile

About the Image(s)

I really liked the pattern of the vaulted ceiling in this old, wooden church in Chiloe, Chile. It is less bold, more subtle than most of my monochromes. I cropped, toned down the brightness at the windows, and submitted it to NIK Silver Efex Pro. Mostly midtones, but with the shadows and windows, I think it does have the full range. Sony 3600a, 18mm, f 5.6, 1/40.

I think you are absolutely right about the range of greys. I took a screen shot and pasted it into Affinity, and you can see the histogram below - the most bell-shaped histogram I've ever seen! There are some blocked blacks and burned whites, but they are small enough to not compromise the picture in my view. The brightest windows perhaps could do with a tad more toning down, they do glare at me a little.

As a picture I think it's an attractive one. Ceilings in churches and cathedrals are awe-inspiring at times. A far cry from plasterboard and emulsion paint! Often I see pictures of such ceilings taken perpendicularly, concentrating on the pattern, but this picture highlights those patterns but puts them nicely in context.   Posted: 05/05/2021 01:29:47

Thank you, Stuart. You'll have me paying more attention to my histograms.   Posted: 05/07/2021 23:16:09

Yes, a very beautiful patterned, wood ceiling, subtly rendered. The glow of the over exposed windows has some appeal to me but I would prefer to have it metered to evenly expose the windows. I think all our cameras now have the necessary dynamic range to capture the entire scene with the assistance of software.   Posted: 05/07/2021 10:16:05

You captured the graphical repeating patterns and textures of the individual wood slats very well. The horizontally-centered composition is perfect and the level of brightness in the end window keeps thing centered. I would not change a thing.   Posted: 05/07/2021 18:50:02

Nicely captured ceiling. I might try to burn window down a notch as light is starting to flare.   Posted: 05/08/2021 08:15:37
