Colored Pistachios by Charles Ginsburgh

August 2022 - Colored Pistachios

About the Image(s)

Canon R6 Camera, 100 mm f/2.8 macro lens, tripod mounted using ambient light
Captured as a stack of 27 images (f/9, 1/20 sec, ISO 640).

I was at a local “farmers market” and ran across these colored Pistachios. Not only do I enjoy eating Pistachios, but these were so unique and colorful that I thought that they would make a wonderful macro image. So here you go …

This image was generated from a recent indoors shoot in my studio (i.e. my dining room table). Here I placed the subjects on a sheet of white, slightly textured glass using ambient light (thus the higher ISO and longer shutter speeds).

The images were stacked in Zerene Stacker (a stacking application) and subsequently processed in Photoshop to remove any stacking artifacts and to enhance the image some.

Let me know what you all think …

Hi Charlie,
Great shot. I'm impressed how you captured sharp details on the pistachios with ambient light. I need lots of light when I focus stack close up. Nicely composed with the colored pistachios. The textured glass with slight reflections of the nuts provided a nice background. On my computer the image seems to be a bit dark. I would prefer it to be brighter. Just my preference. It's a lovely image.   Posted: 08/02/2022 13:05:37

Shooting magnified images do take more light. I think this is due to the fact that the area being captured is smaller (thus the magnification) so less light is reflected back to the lens/sensor. One of advantages of using a tripod is that this is less of an issue though since one can apply longer exposures. I have been known to create focus slices using 2 sec exposures or longer.   Posted: 08/07/2022 12:30:24

Hi Charlie: An interesting subject well photographed. The pistachios with their various colors are arranged in an interesting design, the light gray textured glass was the perfect color background for the subjects.   Posted: 08/07/2022 01:20:42
