Columbine Portraits by Murphy Hektner, APSA

June 2021 - Columbine Portraits

About the Image(s)

DATA: Nikon D700 with Nikon 200mm macro lens on tripod --- ISO 1600 --- 1/160 @ f/13 --- cloudy and calm. Post processed in Elements.

Maker's Aims and Comments: This blue and white Columbine lives in a container on our back deck. Had been observing the flower since bud stage in order to determine if an interesting photo was a possibility; decided to give it a go to see if I could create an interesting composition. The background was busy and distracting, so decided to use a black background. Also have a version I photographed further back; while I was able to include entire length of the petals in the frame the flowers became somewhat smaller in the frame, as a result the picture had somewhat less impact.

This is really nice. The color contrast adds a lot. I like the background choice. There is good contrast in the leaves.

Hi Murphy,
Lovely image. Well exposed, good DOF, and sharp. The colors pop against the black background.   Posted: 06/10/2021 08:38:35
