About the Image(s)

My wife and I visited the St Louis Aquarium with our family and I took a few shots using my IPhone. I was attracted to the jellyfish tank and wondered if I could place one of them on a black background…

Workflow: I used a Silver Efex preset to render the BW image, used the Detail Extractor to make the jellyfish standout, inverted the image using an adjustment layer to get a white jellyfish, did a copy and paste on the image and added a black color layer below the pasted image. I did a merge visible to create a new layer, duplicated it and ran that layer through the high pass filter to bring out a little more detail. I then blended the high pass layer using Overlay. Done

Emil, it's fantastic! However, what I REALLY appreciate is your description. Although I have the latest Nik Collection, I wasn't familiar with the Detail Extractor. So, seeing the fabulous end result of your workflow, I decided that I needed to learn about this Color Efex filter... and it's very impressive. I will begin using it. THANK YOU!

Thank you so much. I use Detail Extractor in my workflow. A couple of things to note. Sometimes I just want to enhance the clouds, which it does well, I will add a mask and paint everything but the sky black. Other times the result looks overcooked so I reduce the layer opacity.

Both tips make a great deal of sense. I especially like the idea of using the Detail Extractor with a mask to determine where it will be applied. Thanks again!

Terrific image! I love jellyfish. You brought out the structure nicely.

Thanks for the details on the workflow. I will try it next time I encounter a jellyfish.   Posted: 11/04/2023 22:34:27

A Fantastic job Emil to make the jellyfish look so perfect. Almost like you took your underwater housing and cam and dove right in. No suggestions.   Posted: 11/05/2023 20:21:23

Jelly fish is great choice for BW. I like that the jelly fish is very sharp, yet maintaining the transparency.   Posted: 11/05/2023 22:37:58

I agree that your choice of subject works very well with monochrome. Leaving it without boarders also enhances the appearance that it's floating in open space. Nicely done!
