My photo for October was taken from a kayak
The day before I watched this juvenile osprey catch and eat a big fish but, of course, I didn't have my camera in the boat that day! I hoped for a repeat performance but he just sat on his branch. I liked the shape of his perch but the sky was boring so I added some textures

Hey Jane, looks like it's just you and me, which is too bad because this is a knockout IMHO. Man O Man. Razor sharp to my eye. The composition and that scraggly tree are just...serendipitous. I'm not kidding. The animal's posture is excellent and evocative to me. Light is fabulous in color and direction as far as I can see. I can tell there was some artificiality in the cloud texture, but it doesn't detract at all IMHO.

This is one of those times, IMHO, when you need to break a rule. You've very carefully put the animals very sharp eye right where most folks would tell you it needs to be, in the upper left crashpoint. But, I think that puts too much dead space above the bird. Don't crop up whatever you do. Just crop down, and put the crash point right on that little nub, just in front of the bird's foot. Is there a bit more space to the right? One last thing, brighten that bit of dark branch which is easy to do. In my humble opinion, this image is a 4+ already, and with those tiny tweaks, is merit award fodder. Congrats. You deserve it here.

What does IMHO mean? Thanks for your kind words and suggestions. I don't particularly like square crops and I don't want to cut off the branch but I totally agree with what you said. I think square is the best option   Posted: 10/15/2021 20:33:26

Wow Jane this is amazing. Did you really have the camera on the kayak and is your 400mm lens not heavy? I'm impressed. I love your background editing and the sharpness of the bird. I kept looking at it thinking it might somehow be a stuffed bird. Hah, well beautifully captured and beautiful colors. I agree, the branch adds to the overall quality of the photo.
Where are you here?
I did not get an image in as I have been in the process of moving.   Posted: 10/18/2021 12:59:23

Thanks so much Dianne. Good luck with your moveā€¦such hard work. Yes, it was taken from my kayak in the lake I love to swim in in a small town on the Oregon Coast. My 400 mm is pretty heavy but manageable with a high shutter speed. The background is a texture. The osprey and branch are as they were   Posted: 10/18/2021 17:27:56
