WALDPORT BRIDGE B/W by Jane Pittenger

July 2021 - WALDPORT BRIDGE B/W

About the Image(s)

Sony A 1
100-400 lens at 100mm
F/8
HDR 160/320/640 sec
ISO 100

I went out to shoot birds with my long lens at the ready. None to be found that morning so I stopped and shot the bridge. This was shot as a handheld The sky was blah overcast so I substituted a sky (that I took facing a different direction where there were a few clouds) and the water was ruffled and without a tripod I couldn't shoot long exposure so I added blur in post processing both to the sky and to the water.

Does it work?

WELL JANE,

AS ONE WHO HAS RETURNED MANY TIMES WITHOUT ANY GOOD SHOTS I UNDERSTAND.
BUT SOMETIMES WE GET THE UNEXPECTED, AND YOU DID THAT HERE.
RECENTLY I WAS CHASING SWALLOW TAIL KITES AND ENDED UP WITH SOME GOOD BUTTERFLIES..WITH MY 500MM HANDHELD,THAT'S AN ARM BREAKER FOR ME.

I LIKE WHAT YOU'VE DONE WITH THE B/W RENDENTION, YOUR EXPOSURE IS GOOD FOR THE LIGHT YOU HAVE, NICE LEADING LINE OF THE BRIDGE DECK TO THE TRESSLE, THE ONLY THING IS I WONDER IF SLIGHTLY CROPPING OF THE TOP AND RIGHT SIDE OTHERWISE LESS SKY AND REMOVING THE HOUSES THEY CATCH MY EYE.
IN A WAY I'M JEALOUS, YOU CAN MAKE ALL THE THINGS IN THIS IMAGE, THAT SOME PEOPLE SPEND A LOT OF TIME SETTING UP FOR AND BUYING OF ALL KINDS OF FILTERS
POST PROCESSING WHAT A WORLD...

NO MATTER WHAT YOU HAVE A NICE IMAGE HERE GOOD JOB   Posted: 07/09/2021 16:52:27

Hi Jane,
I think this is a pretty eye-catching image. The sharpness of the bridge, and it's relative brightness, and the fact that it's a screaming leading line, really bring my eye in. I think the exposure is well-done, and I compliment ingenuity with regard to the sky replacement.

You could experiment with crops, which might or might not change anything.

To me, the sky's graniness doesn't match the rest of the image, and the water looks a touch weird. But to tell you the truth, those don't ruin the image for me, so don't let my opinion on those two things spoil this critique for you. Further, I applaud your resourcefulness.   Posted: 07/09/2021 23:08:27

Nice clear picture Jane. Agree that a little less sky would help. While scrolling up and down in the comments area I am able to cut off more of the top part of the picture with help of the tool(?) bar at the top. Give it a try Jane. I would lose the top 3rd of the sky. Brings out the importance of the bridge, trees and water.   Posted: 07/12/2021 10:47:05
