Taylor Reaches for the Hoop by Gerald Emmerich Jr, HonFPSA, GMPSA/P

About the Image(s)

Image Title: “Taylor Reaches for the Hoop”

The photo was taken during the Diamond Head Classic men’s college basketball tournament at the University of Hawaii’s Stan Sheriff Center. I was sitting along the base line opposite one of the team benches about five rows off the floor. I like this angle because I can put the players bench in the background.

Hi Gerry, your basketball photos show that you have been photographing this sport for a long time and you know which are the right locations to take good photos. The hand movement of the player Taylor and the position of the ball in front of the basket give the photo a special dynamic, in addition to the facial expression of the Nebraska player in the background, who still has the hope that the ball does not reach the basket.   Posted: 11/02/2021 03:57:04

Gerry, I agree with Hans that your images show your knowledge of photographing basketball. I especially like being able to see the faces of all the main subjects. As I said in my PSA article, there are several stories being told such as the shooter, and the player in green holding on to his opponent. The separation of the two green players also makes the image better. Well done. Bruce I see that Isaac Vaisman is joining our group. He is also in my nature group and will be a nice addition.   Posted: 11/02/2021 10:52:02

Gerry, glad to be here and learn a little more about sports photography from the experts: you Basketball, Bruce soccer and Hans about playing soccer in a motorcycle (never heard off or seen that before). We are sharing a basketball image this month. Mine is what I was able to capture, from where I was sitting. Not much planning. From what I read in this group, you really know what you are doing. In this image I find very intriguing the blur around the right hand of # 22 (Taylor) but on second look, I realized that it was the legs of the person sitting in the distance and out of focus, partially blocked by the ball. It looked to me like some sort of powder. I also find very rewarding the fact of the separation from the players of the ones sitting in the back, improves the image. Additionally, player 31 is ready to bite his tongue. The image is sharp.   Posted: 11/02/2021 15:24:52

An action packed photo, the hand, ball and net tell a powerful story. No background distractions.   Posted: 11/08/2021 22:57:54
