Title: Blue Fins in Air
This photo was taken at Pipeline on Oahu’s North Shore. The waves the day before were in the 25-30 feet range, and a good deal of the beach was washed away. The waves were in the 15 feet range when I took the photo, but the lifeguards had the beach roped off so that spectators and photographers were about 30 yards from where the waves were hitting the shore, and the surfers were about 100 yards from the camera.
As usual, I was sitting in my beach chair waiting for the action. There weren’t a lot of good surfers, but occasionally, someone would hit a wave just right and go flying. When a body (boogie) boarder hit a breaking wave just right and went flying, I was able to capture the breaking wave with the boarder in midair and his legs and blue flippers flying, too.
As shown in Original 1, I cropped the image to just show the boarder. Which do you like better, the main image with the boarder and breaking wave OR the boarder without the wave?
My camera is a Canon R5, and the lens is the 100-500mm zoom lens at 500mm. The settings were f:8, ISO 200, at 1/2000 sec.

I like your crop with the waves as the face of the surfer is partially hidden, the addition of the waves gives it more appeal. The matching color blue gives the image interest.   Posted: 03/06/2025 09:46:40
