August 2022 - Sharing the Collard Greens

About the Image(s)

This image was created a few years ago during a field trip to the Miami Zoo with the Camera Club, at the Samburu Giraffe Feeding Station. At this interactive exhibit, guests can walk up a custom-built ramp that leads to an elevated platform overlooking the African Plains exhibit. You can purchase delicious green veggies like lettuce or collard greens to feed to these giant creatures. You will get to look into their eyes as they come right up to you and extend their 14-inch-long tongues to gently scoop the treats right out of your hand.
Here we see a father with his mesmerized daughter on his arms as he is holding the collar green on his mouth, and the giraffe is taking it out of his mouth.
Nikon D4 with Nikkor zoom lens 80-400 mm @ 240 mm with these settings: ISO 500, f/8 and 1/800 sec +1/3 EC. Image was PP in LightRoom and cropped

I think the expression on little girl's face says it all for me.... 'Daddy, are you crazy?'. Great catch of the action with the giraffe's tongue extended, the man and the little girl. The green trees in the background make the image busy but I don't know what you could have done about that either in shooting the image or in post. B   Posted: 08/07/2022 18:22:37

Bruce, there was no time to change vantage point. Now that you mention it, I had not thought about that   Posted: 08/07/2022 18:48:50

Special.
The young girl knows she has the coolest if not greatest dad in the world. I agree with Bruce's comments about the background trees. To me the collards and trees create tension as the collard appears to be an extension of the trees. The timing and witnessing of the event, I can only imagine the pleasure it brought you.   Posted: 08/07/2022 19:56:02

Isaac, These animal pictures are always fun. I like the interaction of the group of three, and the edited version where you cleaned up some of the background foliage. Your camera point of view indicate the you must have been up high as well to catch this shot at eye level. Nice clean sky which adds some negative space and provides some relief for the eye to rest. Perhaps works as a B&W too??   Posted: 08/16/2022 05:56:23

I love this image. Great job. I like it in black and white too.   Posted: 08/19/2022 15:45:53

I like the way all eyes are on dad - daughter's and animals with the little fence leading in. If the trees where darkened or desaturated a little would that help. I think the black and white helped with the background but there is a loss of continuity of the plant between man and animal that is linked by the colour.   Posted: 08/23/2022 18:07:17
