Watchung Plaza Deli by Bruce Goodman

September 2021 - Watchung Plaza Deli

About the Image(s)

This suburban neighborhood delicatessen in my hometown, Montclair, NJ, originally opened in 1926 but fell victim to diminished business due to Covid in 2020. While walking in this area of small shops this past March I looked in the window and was struck by both the emptiness and order of what remained.

To capture the shot, I put my camera lens directly on the window to block any reflections. This was a single shot and the only picture for the day. The store is still vacant though a deli is opening around the corner in a new building.

Shot with Olympus OMD-EM 1; 12-40 mm; ISO 200, 17 mm, f 4.0,1/10 sec.

Post-processed in LR mostly concentrating on reducing highlights and finding details in the shadows.

Bruce, this image is timely, and the selection of the sort of Sepia/Black and White interpretation suits it very well. It records for posterity the characteristics of the dinners back then. It has good DOF and it is sharp.   Posted: 09/14/2021 21:43:46

A still life that tells something about the Covid-19 pandemic. The sepia color makes the photo appear to be from the 1940s. nice perspective   Posted: 09/15/2021 10:26:10

Bruce, I like the perspective of the passageway which leads you to the back door of the image and adds depth. The architectural details of this image and orderliness of the equipment remain silent-who could ever imagine that this would be new normal. Good conversion to B&W with good range of tonal values including the "black" point of the ceiling fans!   Posted: 09/17/2021 05:32:39

A huge and unfortunate result of a time gone by. Emptiness, a huge and unfortunate result of a now too often reality. Good eye and good decision to convert to b&w. The pic would be a great submission for the Covid history books. Good eye.   Posted: 09/27/2021 09:35:44
