Never Rains by Dan Waters

June 2021 - Never Rains

About the Image(s)

Nikon D5000 ISO 250 35mm f/10 1/500 sec

Never Rains is from a car, stopped at a light in Southern California. I found the napping women enjoying the sun attractive and simply raised camera and captured the moment. Global adjustments in Lightroom then exported to photoshop where I used the lasso tool and selected the background and then applied blur.

Dan, an image is more than a thousand words. You were at the right place at the right time. I like the juxtaposition of the lady with the painted blue background which looks like an underwater scene, and here she is exposed and baking under the sun, already showing some tanning effects, meaning that she does this frequently. I find the other concrete bench and the white structure behind distracting, so I cropped the image. Good colors, and sharp.   Posted: 06/14/2021 09:16:55

It will be useful to learn others opinion as I considered optional cropping and wished to maintain balance and then the unattractive elements vs. attractive. Comments invited.   Posted: 06/15/2021 07:12:13

Dan, this is exactly the purpose of these discussion groups. We do not all have to agree !!   Posted: 06/15/2021 07:19:30

Dan I like the well dressed woman soaking up the sun. She managed to be seated in front of this artwork which provides the perfect background yet is part of the street environment. As an alternative crop... the image is flipped horizontally and cropped tight to the artwork which bring her placement to the thirds. The crop also eliminates the red distractive elements in the street which so not add to the story. Good work Dan!   Posted: 06/17/2021 04:50:17

I favor your crop Gloria and another great example of "get close" to the subject.   Posted: 06/21/2021 15:00:09

This photo is supported by the very expressive lady in full sunlight. My first reaction was to crop. Then I saw that the colleagues had the same reaction. I would only remove the blue car so the children's drawing is a repetition of the painting behind the lady. Nice scene .   Posted: 06/21/2021 12:47:44

Southern California.... La-la Land! Here is a woman enjoying a few minutes of the sun on a busy street. While I appreciate the calm woman in a busy street scene (both cars and colors), some cropping of the image while leaving some of the background may still tell the same story. The face expression of the lady is telling everything about the place and weather. Beautiful colors, the sunlight and the shadows there are adding so much to the photo.
I agree with Gloria and Isaac in their suggestions.   Posted: 06/24/2021 04:24:56
