Pineapple Vendor by Dr Isaac Vaisman, APSA, PPSA

October 2024 - Pineapple Vendor

About the Image(s)

This image was created in Arusha - Tanzania near the main town market. The vendor was going that way with his load of fresh pineapples. I used a Nikon Z8 with the Nikkor zoom lens 24-200 mm f/4-6.3 @ 32 mm and from our moving car out the window and with these settings: ISO 14400, f/8 and 1/4000 sec in burst mode. The image was PP in LightRoom, passed through the new Denoise slider and cropped.

Isaac, I love this shot. The one thing that bother's me is the car. I tried removing it but was not successful. I did find while working on it, that the gentleman stood out much better without it, but I couldn't get the final attempt to my satisfaction.   Posted: 10/02/2024 12:57:45

Bev, I never intended to remove the car since I think is part of the street scene, but just for the heck of doing it, and using generative fill in ACR, this is what I obtained, which is pretty good.   Posted: 10/03/2024 21:40:34

I really like it better without the car as it keeps my attention on the peddler. And you did a better job than I did which is why I didn't include my effort in my comment.   Posted: 10/04/2024 00:22:52

I like the scene as shown. The car and the truck behind the vendor show the how in some cases things do not change, modern and the past, Although the crop does highlight the vendor and his load it leaves me wondering what he is looking at as there seems to be a void in that area.   Posted: 10/09/2024 13:32:38

I like it both ways but the first is my first choice. Very sharp and expressive of the young guy working hard.   Posted: 10/13/2024 19:19:58

Isaac - You are a master at shooting out car/bus windows, capturing a slice of life in your travels. A colorful and expressive image. Interesting that he is wearing a heavy winter coat - a good contrast to warm-weather pineapples. I don't think the temperature drops much below the mid-50s at anytime of the year. Good photo. To me it is a snapshot. I am unable to see anything beyond. Maybe it is just me.   Posted: 10/18/2024 01:30:40

Pinaki, most of the street photography images are "snapshots'. You are shooting from the hip almost every time. There is no time for planning and make a "good" composition unless it is a landscape or city scape.   Posted: 10/24/2024 14:10:49

Yes, technically it is a snapshot but what we try to do is to bring something greater, other than capturing the moment.'Capturing the moment' as it is pure journalism whose purpose is to potray the reality and truth. Check out the photos of Rgahubir Singh..all of them are snapshot (technically) but they do bring in something extra which is sometimes hard to articulate with words.   Posted: 10/24/2024 15:23:50

Pinaki, Rgahubir Singh's photography is very interesting. Every viewers vision is most likely different. I would like you to elaborate a little more of what do you mean with "all of them are snapshots (technically)"   Posted: 10/28/2024 00:32:30

Isaac-- Seems like the skills to shoot out of a moving vehicle should be cultivated by anyone interested in street photography since the POV from street level is best seen from a car. This man and his cart with rubber tires and pineapples is a dynamic figure. The background provides important context. Your discussion with Pinaki regarding "snapshots" and street photography is interesting. I have a friend in Europe who becomes offended if I call one of his images a "shot" because that suggests to him unplanned and off-the-cuff when he is quite deliberate in his photography. What makes street photography fun is banging out a lot of images on the fly on a busy street full of interesting people like this hard-working pineapple vendor.   Posted: 10/29/2024 20:45:29
