Early Christmas by Bob Crocker

November 2021 - Early Christmas

About the Image(s)

Our Christmas cactus is blooming early, so I thought it would make a good subject. It's a large plant and sits by the front window. Gets plenty of light but did make the background bright. Shot with my Sony a6500, 90mm macro lens, f8, ISO 200 at 1/100. Gave the overall image a green tint which I thought helped reduce the brightness in the background. Brushed in some contrast, clarity and sharpness just on the flower.

I like the complimentary colors of red and green and the blurred background is lovely. I would like to see the flower brightened just a bit.   Posted: 11/18/2021 10:22:33

Thanks Cindy, I see what you mean. This might be a good time for me to experiment with a curves adjustment.   Posted: 11/19/2021 13:17:24

Good choice for the subject, we might skip next month's submission. The flower looks to be reaching for the light which is reflected in the shades of colors. The red is intense. My brother worked for a major printer in LA and he would analyze thousands of shades of colors for magazine covers. One small suggestion is to get the stem leading into the corner. It would level out the flower. Have a great holiday if we take next month off.   Posted: 11/23/2021 11:33:26

This is a beautiful image of the flower; it is light and ethereal, but with strength in its colour and composition. It reminds me of a dancer. As Cindy said, try experimenting with slight curves adjustments - but I do love it just as it is, too.   Posted: 11/23/2021 16:27:16

Very nice, still waiting for ours to blum.
I like the sharpness of the stem, then leading your eyes up into the flower.   Posted: 11/24/2021 08:42:27
