About the Image(s)

My image for this month was taken at a children's' birthday party. The light was terrible, so I had a very high ISO of 6400 and centre-weighted metering set. This young girl had got a bit overwhelmed and I managed to get a close-up shot of her face before she noticed me.

I had set depth of field to f/6.3 which suited most shots I was taking, but in this one the left eye is not quite in focus. It annoys me - but the parents liked it and wanted a copy.

I cropped to a square crop as otherwise there was just too much background, and it eliminated the father's ear from the shot, which I didn't like.

I softened it a little to minimise the noise, and masked the eyes so they were not affected. I then cooled and desaturated the background, leaving the colour of her skin. Her eyes were very beautiful and I am disappointed I just missed a tear drop rolling down her cheek, before it was hidden.

Thanks in advance for your comments and suggestions.

I think this is a great shot! The left eye being slightly out of focus is only bothering you. Unless you are right on top of it, you can't really tell. I think the crop works and you really focus on her. And why is she crying?!!!   Posted: 10/11/2021 12:27:05

You captured an emotional shot which tells a story. Makes me want to know more. You have nice skin tones and her eyes are captured well with catch-lights. The lighting on her hair is lovely. My only suggestion is to crop and clone out the begining of her hand in the bottom left and use a vignette to pull the viewer right in to her face.   Posted: 10/11/2021 21:18:25

I did not read Cindy's comments before I decided what I was going to suggest and I feel good because I, too, suggested Cindy's crop. I hope there are enough pixels to print. I like the suggestion of the tear drop, and I am sure her parents loved the picture.   Posted: 10/13/2021 14:44:52

Nice candid portrait shot. You captured the mood and present a nice story. The eye softness doesn't bother me, the tears may help explain the softness. Cindy's suggestions/edits do work well.   Posted: 10/15/2021 11:18:13
