About the Image(s)

The annual RAGBRAI (The [Des Moines] Registers Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa) takes 5 days to bike the 350-450 miles across the state. About 15,000 riders are expected for this year’s ride. Four years ago the next to the last stop was in my town. The first order of business the next morning was to ride up this very steep hill, where I was positioned. Original captured with a Canon 5D Mkiii, ISO 1600, f/7.1, exp 1/160 sec, focal length 200mm. Image processed with D.A.P. Re-Acrylic template then layered over original and blending and adjustments applied.

This was taken at a perfect, and wonderful vantage point. I love that, compositionally, the riders create a perfect "V" as you look down the hill. Excellent. Removing the background elements of the stop sign and the figures in neon yellow was a great choice. Your processing choices also gave the riders some anonymity; which I love. You don't have to see the rider's faces or facial details to know the journey they are on, and the uphill climb they are facing. Wonderful image.   Posted: 05/14/2022 18:34:28

Great camera angle. It looks like you were right in the middle of the street which can be scary so you thought through your position creatively. Your image has wonderful depth perception and I can feel the tension in the riders as they go up this hill, especially the one with the purple top on the right. As Cindy noted, eliminating some of the rider's detail in their faces adds to the image and creates more of an art piece than a photograph. Nice image.   Posted: 05/15/2022 13:19:39

A very colourful image with a great background modification when compared to the original. This image almost reminds me of a cartoon effect .   Posted: 05/21/2022 04:13:39

Very well composed action shot of the bikers. I like your chosen artistic choice. The bottom of the V is the red-shirted biker, so I'd eliminate that bright white spot, ditto with a similar spot at top left. What do you think aout lightening up the biker at far left, his arms and face like those of the biker at far right?   Posted: 05/22/2022 11:41:40

Cindy's commentary was on the mark about how impressive the angle was, your location to shoot, and the V shape formed by the riders. While I've shot a fair number of bicycle races, I don't recall such steep stretches, so this really stands out. The DAP treatment smoothed things out enough to blur the personal details, but I like to see that it left some of the foreground details in the street, for added interest. Great result!   Posted: 05/28/2022 16:02:32
