About the Image(s)

A flock of geese takes its evening flight over Central Wisconsin woodland, pasture, and croplands in early October. This is the time of year when evenings are as invigorating as early mornings and farm machinery can be heard harvesting corn and soybeans. I was coming home from another area of fall photography when I came upon this scene where flocks of geese were flying. I picked out a spot where there is a zig zag pattern to the geography and I got some dairy cows in the scene at bottom to add a little bit more of a Wisconsin flavor to the image. I wanted to have a thin edge at the bottom so as to give some space between he cows and the edge and also have a definitive line leading across the image. Tech data: ISO 1270, f/8, 1/1600 sec, aperture Priority, pattern metering, 180mm focal length. I edited out some of the geese at right and was careful to mask out some painting on the cows so they’d remain fairly sharp. I used TopazStudio to alter the sky’s colors while masking out the geese so the fowl would remain sharp. Standard PS ad LR processing, then put into TopazStudio for the magic, then into PS for some dodging.

The thought you put into the photo paid off. The zig-zag pattern you mention is what draws my eye to the image. I really enjoy all the diagonal lines it presents. Your painting is so much brighter and colorful than the camera capture. Nice work in the more attractive sky and trees. Nicely done.   Posted: 01/15/2022 15:29:02

Your post processing choices have given this image an Orton-like, dreamy quality and I love it. The upgraded colors, especially in the trees and sky, are wonderful. I, too, love the zigzag patterns in the composition; it keeps my eyes moving through the image. Great image and great painting.   Posted: 01/16/2022 12:50:24

I like your description of the how and where as an interlude to your artwork. So descriptive. You certainly achieved what you set out to achieve. Well done Trey.
Thank you Nancy and Cindy for saying it all.   Posted: 01/22/2022 00:15:01

Such great improvement with the now more-colorful scene. I agree with you having lopped-off the stragglers from the main geese formation to improve the zigzag composition. Also, having the cows in the foreground does help say "Wisconsin" as the setting.   Posted: 01/23/2022 14:45:21
