About the Image(s)

I bought this shell years ago to photograph and never did. This is the first time for sharing this. However, I have enjoyed it for some time as it sits on one of my end tables in the family room. The beauties of the Nautilus Shell are the spiral chambers and their iridescent mother of pearl. I set up this still life using window light and you can see the wad of tape I used to keep it upright. A selection was made and painted with the PS mixer brush.

Wow, what a difference from the original. Your background color, and texture, scheme was a perfect choice to allow the iridescent colors of the Nautilus to take center stage. I also commend you on the excellent shadow brushwork- the contact shadows under the shell are spot on, and I love that you also softened the shadow on the non-segmented portion of the shell interior. I can only imagine how long it took to paint all those wonderful details. You brought out the best in this image.   Posted: 09/14/2021 16:16:19

Your choice of the textured background brings a wonderful contrast to the shell. It's a dreamy image and I like the square crop to contrast with the curves of the shell. Very well done!   Posted: 09/18/2021 09:45:49

You took a geometric-looking subject up a bunch of levels with your lovely treatment of its background, Nancy. I like the detail of those little blotches behind it on the wall. Nice how the brownish tones set off the outside of the shell so well. It looks peaceful to contemplate. It would make an excellent cover for a book, I think. Or, of course, a wonderful square painting.   Posted: 09/26/2021 16:05:31
