About the Image(s)

This was shot before Memorial Day at 2PM on an iPhone X at 1/1900 sec, f/1.8, ISO 20, 4mm focal length, no flash. For the past several years, the American Legion has set up this patriotic display downtown in a park. Unfortunately for them, there was a heavy downpour at the opening ceremony. Fortunately for me, I arrived later, while the water was still running in the ditch alongside the display and the sun was coming out, creating interesting shadows and these reflections.

I cropped a little of the right and bottom in Adobe Camera Raw and increased the reds and greens to 100 and the blues to 40 and added some vignette. In Photoshop, I was able to clone out some distractions: rooftops, signs, boxes. I cloned in some extra flags to the left (duller) side of the water in the ditch to brighten it up as much as the right side, then used the Blur tool to smooth it all out. In Topaz Simplify, I liked 2 of the filters and applied Watercolor to one layer and Pastel to the one on top and set the blend mode to "color".

So this image covers Memorial Day, this month's Flag Day, and early for Independence Day.

Being at the right place and at the right time makes so many images come to life. You're right - those shadows and reflections may not have been there at any other moment. For me, those shadows and reflections are the key components of the composition. I also love how the line of flags create a leading line towards the distant horizon. Your processing choices also created additional depth and contrast. Well done.   Posted: 06/17/2021 08:17:36
