Bear of Yellowstone by Pauline Jaffe

November 2021 - Bear of Yellowstone

About the Image(s)

Last month my husband and I took the Columbus Day Holiday as an opportunity to get away and since we had never been to Yellowstone or in my adult memory, we spent a few precious days there. As luck would have it the winter storms came early, but I also captured this fellow. I took him with my Nikon 5600,with 70-300 lens. I shot at f11, 1/80, ISO 100.

Pauline, I'm not a naturalist but I think that bear is a grizzly, appropriately named ursus arctos horribilis. I hope that you were in a safe place, like a tank. How close were you?
I submitted some changes from Lightroom for your input: removed some snow from the nose, lightened the head, cut back on the clarity and added a vignette. Best, Alec   Posted: 11/08/2021 13:48:55

A good shot. Wild animals are always interesting. It looks a bit over sharpened/clarity. I realize this shot can not be repeated. Live animals moving or not need a higher shutter speed, to maintain sharpness.   Posted: 11/11/2021 04:50:23

Pauline are you able to share what the original unedited version looks like?

A few things for this photo, the tendency is to shoot in close but I think given the posture and the way the bear is looking it would be better to keep this slightly wider to give the viewer a chance to see where the bear is looking.

From the technical standpoint we want photos that are sharp and low noise so I can see why you were at ISO100 and F/11. However while shooting longer lens at the long end 200, 300, etc. You really need to increase that shutter speed so you don't get motion blur. In case like this I usually shoot F/5.6 or so and then I use auto ISO times so I can keep a fast shutter.   Posted: 11/12/2021 09:08:42

A good shot, love to see images of animals from other countries, no bears here in the land of OZ, except the cuddly koala! Unfortunately the snow is very grey and since we don't have much snow here I'm not sure how you deal with it. Great image though, even if not perfect>   Posted: 11/14/2021 20:50:31

Nice shot of the grizzly looking with rapt attention at something off camera. Snow on his nose seems a bit distracting, nicely removed with Alec's adjustments.   Posted: 11/26/2021 15:25:29
