Theodore Roosevelt National Park by Matt Moses

October 2021 - Theodore Roosevelt National Park

About the Image(s)

A view of the hills and buttes in the southern unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park located near Medora, ND. Still trying to decide if I like the composition or not. I didn't have a lot of time to spend here so felt a bit rushed with my kids wondering around. Would have liked to get back here for sunset but ran out of time for that.

Tech:
D850
24-120/F4 lens @ 35mm
ISO 100
1/20 sec at F/8
Graduated split ND filter for sky vs land

Editing:
adjusted black/white points
increase contrast
applied clarity and used dehaze for mid-tones

A beautiful blue sky with white clouds at the top and the green bushes/trees at the bottom that offset the brown hills and buttes of the park in between. I like the pattern of the green points in front and the pointed brown hills all the way to the back.   Posted: 10/10/2021 16:57:49

A good balanced between sky and buttes. The sky is the most interesting element in the image. I would crop out some of the bottom foreground. Kids will do that every time.   Posted: 10/17/2021 09:11:57

This image is very sharp from front to back. Interesting sky. You are right to want to go back at sunset or sunrise as it would bring more color to the buttes. For me, I would rather see this in a landscape orientation with more of the buttes and less of the foreground.

This is a lovely landscape image. The buttes are sharp and they form a pattern that lead my eye from the foreground to the through the image. I think that perhaps the sky has a little too much real estate given the park is your focal point.   Posted: 10/19/2021 20:54:59

I think you have the makings of a nice image here, Matt. There is a lot of foreground and whilst the 2 bushes lead my eye, I think it would be stronger in a square format. A bit of burning on the LHS and around the bottoms of the mountains, and a bit of texture on the mountains, make them pop and lead my eye. I've had a little bit of a play to show you what I mean, I hope you don't mind.   Posted: 10/21/2021 00:25:30

Interesting image and interesting terrain. Personally, I like the long foreground with green grass as a contrast to the brown hills. The sky is perfect.   Posted: 10/21/2021 09:08:57
