About the Image(s)

Here is ”The Get-away Car””. During a photo workshop about abandoned houses, I stumbled on a cemetery for old cars and fell totally in love with a backlit beauty (Orig.1). I could see the spirits of Bonnie (Orig.2) and Clyde (IOrig. 3) hovering by. I used the car image as a background, enlarged the canvas at the bottom and added a layer of Gaussian blur in the lower part. Bonnie and Clyde were cut out and pasted on the background in 50% opacity in luminosity mode - I had a lot of problems with Bonnie and her wisps of hair, and I think that she looks rather clumsy. I turned the whole lot into black-and-white and added a little Gaussian blur on their outlines, and diffuse glow, in Affinity Photo. The sepia toning is intended to give it an aged feeling - I don?t know if it only makes it look stuffy.. - I think that the bokeh and flare in the background image create a nice dreamy feeling, but Bonnie and Clyde look disappointingly non-ethereal. if they are made more transparent, they disappear in the background, and making the brighter seems not work either. I am so looking forward to your ideas!

Hi Kirsti, My first impression was Scandi Noir! A lot of Scandi Films have a title page like this where the prime characters and story are encapsulated into an image. You have achieved that look.
I like the Sepia toning and the feel of the image. The placement OF THE subjects is on point. The car background is delicious and needs nothing.
There are a couple of things you may wish to try.
1. See attached edited image. I added a curves layer, in drop down list top right, select Auto options > select enhance monochromatic contrast> flatten > another curves layer and add a shallow contrast layer to increase contrast on subjects at bottom and increase the light in the background > flatten.
2. Some of the image is too see through in bits. Girls hair bottom LH. The guys hat RHS can see the car too easily through it.
3. I would darken to fade out the guys jacket that is between the girl and the guy. Its not needed to the story or image.
I hope these edits are ok with you, please ignore if you dont agree. I still think its very FILM LIKE image and love it.

Thank you so much, Bruce! I think that your edits corrected just what what was wrong in the image - I had started to think about the transparent issue myself, too, after I had posted the image. I am so glad that the feel of the story comes through!   Posted: 10/08/2024 15:59:28

Kirsti, I'm afraid I don't see in your composite what you and Bruce see. There is so much violence in the U.S. today that, for me, there's no romanticism left in Bonnie and Clyde, James Bond, or The Godfather. I hate to say I see only a man, a woman, a car, and some bokeh. I'm sorry I can't offer feedback that is constructive.   Posted: 10/17/2024 19:06:51

Alan, you are on the same lines with my husband: when he walked by my screen, he asked if the image is about a young couple who think about buying a car. - About Bonnie and Clyde, I understand and deeply respect your point. To me, their story has been one of the tragic romantic ballads that started to run before my eyes when I took the photo of the car.   Posted: 10/20/2024 10:08:56

Hi Kirsti, New guy here so take everything with a grain of salt!
I've been to many a car show and never really know what to do with my images, so this is a cool concept. I really enjoy how you composited the shapes of the car and the faces.
I see the issues that you raised and agree with Bruce on the added contrast helping the overall scene. You might want to try to add some fog or smoke on the very bottom and side foreground to help blend in the faces with the ethereal feel of the cemetery car.   Posted: 10/20/2024 00:09:25

Hi Matt, and welcome to the group! I think that the fog or smoke is a great idea that would help to bind everything together.   Posted: 10/20/2024 10:11:36

Hi Kirsti, I agree with Bruce's comment about those small details, his edits corrected them an made the image more appealing to the viewer. I really love the sepia tone, it suits the image perfectly to the image.
