About the Image(s)

The state of Maryland is in the news because of the emergence of Cicadas after 17 years of living underground. They are fascinating. This is one of many pictures I took of one emerging from its exoskeleton. I have worked on it and others so many times I have forgotten what I did besides the usual Adobe and Topaz DeNoise and Sharpen processes.

WOW! That red eye grabs my attention. This is a great insect shot. You captured him at just the right moment. What camera, lens, and settings did you use? Every year the Entomology Society of America has a photo contest. I think you should consider entering this one. The detail and story are wonderful. I have not seen any cicadas yet.   Posted: 06/11/2021 20:57:56

My first reaction was WOW also. You really captured a special moment in the lifecycle of the Cicada. The insect is very sharp and I think your cropping in tight is very effective in keeping our eye on the whole process. I agree with Judith that you should enter this image in a contest. We don't have Cicadas here in the western US and I don't envy you except for this wonderful image. Bravo!   Posted: 06/12/2021 16:24:58

It has been fascinating! I have loved watching these gentle creatures appear everywhere. They do no harm. Some are put off by their flying around but I enjoy them. I'm glad to experience this once every 17 years event of nature.

Congrats on getting this image. We are currently in Michigan and had counted on having Cicadas here - but nope! Your image looks sharp to me and the crop seems to work well in my opinion. I think the DOF is perfect - everything that needs to be sharp is sharp, and the background does not look distracting to me. I have no suggestions for improvement. Nice work.   Posted: 06/13/2021 11:39:21

Great shot! Only two suggestions: try rotating it clockwise 90degrees and 180 and see if you like that better. Right now I find the current orientation difficult to read. Also you may want to play with the background a bit: darkening it down a stop or two could really get the white of the newly emerged adult to stand out more.   Posted: 06/15/2021 01:16:15

That is a very unusual capture for as have never seen a Cicada emerging before...wonderful! I always hear them but never know what they really look like at that stage of their life. How interesting they have such a bright red eye. The detail and sharp focus is great throughout. I might have toned down the background a bit adding a vignette pehaps? Definitely competition worthy!   Posted: 06/15/2021 15:46:39
