About the Image(s)

This was taken a few months ago in the historic town of Locke which is located south of Sacramento in the Delta along the Sacramento River. It was the original town of the Chinese who settled here and people still reside there. This old wooden wall/door caught my eye because of all the carving/writing on it...communication in its most rudimentary format! I converted to monochrome in silver efex pro to bring out the wood grain and the writings. It was taken with Nikon D500, ISO 160, f/8, 1/100.

What an interesting door. I love old doors and windows. The stories they tell. Here,, you certainly did bring out the old carvings, Vertical lines are vertical. Its the door with age that is not square. Good job. It would make a great conversion piece hanging on a wall and framed with a thin black frame.   Posted: 06/14/2022 14:59:55

Mary Ann, Although I do like the soft tones in the colour version, I agree that your BW conversion really works to highlight the lines, shapes and textures in the image. All that carving is amazing - I think it would be interesting to see a straight-on, closer-up version of this scene, to allow us to peruse the "messages". Just a thought.   Posted: 06/15/2022 22:38:00

Thank you, Lorna. I will have to go back and try that perspective.   Posted: 06/19/2022 08:08:31

I, too, love old doors. You found a nice one here and the enhanced details add character. The carvings add a story element to it. I wonder if a straight-on shot which also included the window might have made a stronger compostion.   Posted: 06/16/2022 06:54:32

Thank you, Cindy. I don't live far from this location so I will have to give it a try.   Posted: 06/19/2022 08:09:02

Cindy has a good idea. You may also want to focus in on part to the image to increase some of the carvings. Good subject.   Posted: 06/28/2022 15:04:48
