Lighthouse and Sailboat by Paul Moertl

January 2022 - Lighthouse and Sailboat

About the Image(s)

I took this picture while on the PSA conference in Portland Maine. I did basically no processing of the image except a bit of sharpening.

This is a good example of negative space and it works well. The horizon is in the middle of the frame, breaking the rule ....and it works! Picasso said "Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist". The lighthouse and pier are well balanced in the frame by the sailboat. The sky has just enough interest that it does not overpower the rest of the scene. This is a very peaceful image. Well done!   Posted: 01/06/2022 07:53:56

Agree, the composition works well. Horizon is straight. A peaceful image. It would be helpful to know particulars of how you made the image.   Posted: 01/06/2022 10:06:48

Well, I guess I did a bit more than I said...For one thing it was at Duluth and originally ISO 4500, 1/250, f/11. At that ISO, I had to denoise it. I think I kept everything else...

Paul, I agree that this is a great example of the use of negative space. The lines in the image work well in leading the eye into it and the sail boat adds balance. Very nice.   Posted: 01/11/2022 05:11:17

Paul, for an image practically straight out of your camera, this is well done! You have captured a quiet scene in an interesting, soft light. I like the detail in the water and in the sky but find the bright patches in the sky (at least on my screen) a little blown out. I agree - good use of negative space.   Posted: 01/12/2022 09:05:06
