About the Image(s)

I met these two in a coffee shop downtown, asked dad if it was ok to photograph his daughter and he agreed. I liked the colour version of this, but often find monochrome works better for minimizing distractions and drawing our eye to the subject(s) in a street scene or portrait. The original is pretty much out of the camera. In the BW I took down the highlights, increased the shadows slightly, added a tiny bit of texture and some sharpening, and selectively lightened her face a bit. 1/220 sec. at f/5.3, 65 mm focal length, ISO 640, natural light.

Good eye and great work. It tells a story complete with emotion and feeling. I feel your BW rendition is excellent with no suggestions needed.   Posted: 11/10/2021 15:23:21

Lorna, this is a very nice image in black and white. I can see the joy of the little one eating her ice cream as well as her father. Nice depth of field and focus on the child. I really like this as you have captured a very sweet moment.   Posted: 11/13/2021 18:02:45

Hi Lorna. Very nice subject matter and I love the clarity and focus of the young girl. She is obviously happy and in a great moment which can be difficult to capture. My only suggestion is to crop down a bit. It's nice to see the facial expression of the father and the adoration in his eyes. Because he is less important and background to the child the whole head does not have to be in view. It will shift the focus downwardly and towards the child. I'd crop it down to the top of his right ear.   Posted: 11/19/2021 15:54:36

Thanks, Kerry. Interesting suggestion - I see what you mean. In the past I have been criticized by competition judges for cropping too tightly. Consequently, I find myself giving my subjucts more room lately.   Posted: 11/20/2021 04:43:36

Such a good expression on the little girl's face. She is darling and you really captured a good moment. For me, the father isn't necessary for the shot. I would crop him out and concentrate on the little girl. That's the connection and story for me in your photo.   Posted: 11/20/2021 13:35:31
