About the Image(s)

I shot a close-up section of this bamboo fence at the Japanese Garden at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. The original colour image with its muted tones appealed to me but I also like the texture and structure of the monochrome. When I converted the image to BW, I thought it seemed harsh - I like the brownish sepia tones much better.

Nikon D750. 24 - 120 mm lens at 44 mm. ISO 100 0.4 secs at f/7.1. Tripod.

What a lovely and creative image that turns the ordinary into the extraordinary. This is well seen and wonderfully put together You positioning of the twine in the lower third area and the addition of the four bamboo "ribs" below the knots is an excellent visual touch. The conversion to monochrome (not b/w) adds a touch of originality to the image and works quite well. You did nearly everything perfectly.

May I suggest that you consider slightly toning down the bright areas on the upper portions of the bamboo. They appear to have lost some detail that shows in the original image.   Posted: 05/08/2021 14:46:42

Thank you for the generous feedback, Larry. And, yes, I totally agree with your suggestion - thanks!   Posted: 05/26/2021 14:43:15

You have nice details, especially in the ropes and the sepia tone works so well here. I would suggest a slight vignette to keep the eye in the frame. Very interesting close-up.   Posted: 05/12/2021 20:59:18

Thank you, Cindy! I often use vignetting for this exact purpose (keeping the eye of the viewer in the frame), but didn't here for some reason. Good suggestion!   Posted: 05/26/2021 14:46:16

Pretty much all of Japanese art and design is exquisitely tasteful. You captured this detail perfectly. The knots alone are like miniature floral arrangements.   Posted: 05/15/2021 22:17:07

Cindy and I are both fans of vignetting. It would add to the image. I wish you would have left the background center slit in the picture. Whites are a little blown out. Not seriously.   Posted: 05/16/2021 10:21:25

Thank you, Chuck. See my reply to Cindy about the vignetting - I agree. About the centre slit, although it doesn't look quite as "in your face" in the colour image, it came out very bright and distracting in the monochrome, so I cloned it out. I agree about the whites - thanks!   Posted: 05/26/2021 14:50:52
